AXELOS decided in 2017 to update PRINCE2®. The basic structure containing principles, themes and processes has been preserved, but the manual and the exams have been improved to give more practical, purposeful and relevant support to everyone working with projects.
The update emphasizes:
- Modification of PRINCE2® to suit the needs of organizations and project environments
- Principles that support the method
- A clearer view of the connection between themes and principles
- Restructuring of the themes to accommodate specific examples of alterations
- Practical application of the manual with many examples, tips and tricks.
PRINCE2® is an extremely flexible, versatile and fully scalable method.
The principles remain unchanged, and it is not necessary to apply all elements of the method to all projects. In order to create clarity around the obligatory elements, the update provides guidance in identifying the minimum requirement for a PRINCE2® project and helps you apply the method more selectively, so PRINCE2®-elements to a higher extent can fit the scale of the project in question.
In order to pass PRINCE2® Foundation you must get a minimum of 33 right answers out of 60 questions. For PRINCE2® Practitioner you must get a minimum of 38 right answers out of 68 questions in order to pass. A Practitioner is valid for 3 years, whereas the previous certification was valid for 5 years. You do however need to be aware, that you cannot apply for recertification, but must take a full exam every three years.
In order to take a Practitioner, you must have passed one of the following:
- PRINCE2® Foundation version 5 or 6 (2009 or 2017)
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
- Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
- IPMA Level A® (Certified project manager)
- IPMA Level B® (Certified senior project manager)
- IPMA Level C® (Certified project manager
- IPMA Level D® (Certified I project manager)
You must bring the PRINCE2® manual with you to the Practitioner exam. If you have any questions about the latest version, we recommend that you get it, as you can get questions for topics which are not described in the earlier versions of the manual.
