The purpose of the Scrum Master is to help the team to use Scrum and thus become more effective and create more value. Too many Scrum Masters fail in this mission. Not because they do something wrong, but rather because they do the right thing at the wrong time.
Being a Scrum Master comes with expectations. From yourself, your surroundings and the organization as a whole. This can make it extremely hard to become a success in the role, as the different interests and expectations rarely align. It also clouds the process and makes it hard to be effective in helping the team create value. There are so many useful tools in the Scrum Master tool box. But knowing when to use the right tool can make or break your career as a Scrum Master and make good intentions fall flat.
The trick is to see the bigger picture of not only the scrum team, but the teams and organization around it. In other words: To have an understanding of the context of things.
