Foster preparedness and protect your projects
Crises arise or are recognized abruptly and put significant human or material values at risk. But it to predict can be difficult when and in what area, a crisis will arise and have effect. Furthermore, everyone implicated most often has a very short time in which to react to the crisis. This can have fatal consequences for projects in organizations and businesses, if the organization does not have its crisis management under control.
Can you plan for the unexpected?
Yes, partially. But it requires that the organization and its leaders as a whole begin getting used to the thought of crises and unpredictability as a condition for all projects. Because by accepting that everything can be turned on its head, the organization is preparing the ground for out-of-the-box thinking to prosper.
When working with crisis robustness among our customers, we always recommend, that they start by devising a contingency plan. The contingency plan describes how the overall crisis management should be carried out, when the regular resources and routines are not enough. Attention can advantageously be focused on for example:
- How decisions are made
- What is communicated to employees and business partners and how often
- Which (it) infrastructure is used
Proactive crisis management of projects
If we zoom in on projects in times of crisis, a project is an investment, that is handled on behalf of citizens or stockholders. Therefore, they need to be protected when crisis hits. In order to be able to establish readiness around the projects, our recommendation is to always be on top of the following actions:
- Create a shared overview of project criticality.
- Determine the governance-structure in relation to the criticalities and produce suitable documentation.
- Complete crisis management training.
- Test your project organization.
